Accommodation

Both nights you will be sleeping under canvas on a private stretch of riverbank.

The off-grid sites are exclusive, wild and remote, with just the essentials you need for a night of back-to-basics camping.

This is wild camping with a luxury twist!

Day 1

Meet us at Hire a Canoe Montford Bridge, where you are welcome to leave your car parked for the duration of your trip.

We will get you kitted up with buoyancy aids, paddles and barrels, then we will drive you to the launch point upstream.

On Day 1, you will be canoeing 10 miles, starting in Llandrinio and going with the flow of the river as it marks the border between England and Wales. If you fancy it, you can get out after 6 miles for a pub stop at the Royal Hill Inn. We can highly recommend this lovely pub with a view! Then get back in your canoe for 4 miles and head down to your first camp.

Night 1

After a few hours of paddling, you will be ready for a rest and no doubt excited to reach camp!

You will find a pre-pitched bell tent awaits, along with a few additional facilities: sleeping mats, campfire area, long-drop toilet, shelter.

Please note that there is no running water at the camp locations so please bring a container of water with you. This can be filled at Montford Bridge on arrival on the morning of the first day and again when you canoe past on Day 2.

Day 2

Set off from camp at your leisure. You will have day of paddling ahead of you but again, nothing too strenuous, another 10-mile day, so still plenty of time for breakfast and packing up.

You will travel past Montford Bridge on Day 2 – give us a wave as you pass by! If you fancy getting out of your canoe at this point, feel free, it’s 4 miles into your trip. Fill up your water bottles from the tap on the field or visit the Wingfield Arms pub on site (food available from midday on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays). If you are leaving a car with us, it will be parked here so you can put anything you don’t need back into your car or grab anything you may have forgotten!

Then carry on downstream for a couple more hours—or 6 miles to be precise—keeping your eyes peeled for the entrance to your camp, details of the exact location will be given by way of a What3Words location.

Night 2

The Berwick beef stop! On this night, you will be staying on the estate that raises these Longhorn cattle.

Enjoy another night in your very own bell tent, this time with the option to add a gourmet BBQ pack to cook up a delicious meal to share, and even a breakfast pack so that you can set off on Day 3 with full bellies!

Day 3

The shortest stretch. After a couple of days on the move, your arms may well be aching so you will be pleased to know there is only a short way to go on the last day!

Take the time to cook a decent breakfast at camp, enjoy the peace of the morning by the river before packing up and getting back in your canoe for the final 5 miles or so into town. We will meet you in Shrewsbury from lunchtime and take you back to Montford Bridge if you have left a car there.

The trip was great, we had the section upstream of Montford Bridge all to ourselves…

I think we saw kingfishers every day…

This stretch of the river was very quiet, with very few people encountered, and you feel like you’re a million miles away from everything.

…good instruction and absolutely everything we needed.

It’s amazing how much you can fit on a canoe but my advice is, if you’ve never done this before, prepare well and don’t over pack! I reckon this is one of the best activity holidays you can do.

Very good boats provided with all the equipment…

…a beautiful and unspoilt part of the world to be paddling in.

Wonderful family trip! Relaxed, peaceful and so much wildlife: we saw herons, egrets, a kingfisher and even a mink!
