Difficulty level 2 of 5

We have graded all of the routes and trips we offer across our various locations on a scale of 1 to 5 (from easy to moderately difficult).

This trip is suitable for beginners and is rated 2/5 because you will be required to negotiate a section of tree-lined faster-moving water.

Prior canoeing experience is not required. You will be given a safety brief and will be made aware of what to look out for along the route.

If you are a confident swimmer, a generally competent person when it comes to learning new things and good at following instructions then you will manage just fine!

🏕️Private & secluded

You will be sleeping under canvas on a private stretch of riverbank.

This off-grid site is for your exclusive use. It is wild and remote, with just the essentials you need for a night of back-to-basics camping.

Think wild camping with a luxury twist!

🛶Day 1

Meet us at Hire a Canoe Montford Bridge, where you are welcome to leave your car parked for the duration of your trip.

We will get you kitted up with buoyancy aids, paddles and barrels.

The stretch of river you will be paddling is suitable for beginners and distance you will be covering is suitable for all fitness levels: a steady 7-mile paddle.

Keep your eyes peeled for the entrance to your camp, details of the exact location will be given by way of a What3Words location on arrival.

Overnight Off-Grid Bell Tent Canoeing Camping Experience Berwick Estate Shrewsbury as featured in The Guardian by Kevin Rushby

🐮At camp

After a few hours of paddling, you will be ready for a rest and no doubt excited to reach camp!

You will find a spacious pre-pitched bell tent awaits, big enough to sleep up to 8 people! Plus a few additional comforts: sleeping mats, campfire area, long-drop toilet, seating. Please note that there is no running water at camp.

You will be staying on an estate that raises Longhorn cattle and there is the option to add a gourmet BBQ pack to cook up a delicious meal to share, and even a breakfast pack so that you can set off on Day 2 with full bellies!

🛶Day 2

Take the time to cook a decent breakfast at camp, enjoy the peace of the morning by the river before packing up and getting back in your canoe for the final 5 miles or so into town.

We will meet you in Shrewsbury at lunchtime and take you back to Montford Bridge if you have left a car there.

🥩Try the local produce

During checkout, you will be offered the following add-ons:

  • Berwick Organics Beef BBQ pack (£18pp)

If you are a meat-eater, we highly recommend giving one or both of these a go! Particularly the BBQ pack: organic beef that was raised on the land beneath your feet, cooked out in the open over an open flame… need I say more?

Bringing the kids?

There must be at least one adult per canoe.

Under-10s: kids aged 7-10 will need to be accompanied by two adults and sit in the middle seat of a 3-seat canoe.

Ages 10+ can paddle at the front of a 2-seat canoe with a responsible adult.

If your family does not quite fit with these age restrictions, you can paddle this route in a “rafted canoe”. This is where we tie two canoes together side-by-side to create a nice, stable craft that cannot be capsized.

From start to finish this was an amazing experience […] considering this is the first time we have ever been canoeing, we coped just fine. Highly recommend if you love the outdoors, peace and quiet and nature.

This stretch of the river was very quiet, with very few people encountered, and you feel like you’re a million miles away from everything.

…good instruction and absolutely everything we needed.

…what an amazing experience. We are going to do this again in the future. Would recommend this experience.

…a beautiful and unspoilt part of the world to be paddling in.

Wonderful family trip! Relaxed, peaceful and so much wildlife: we saw herons, egrets, a kingfisher and even a mink!
