Park at Montford Bridge, we shuttle you upstream to Crew Green. Then you can enjoy canoeing or kayaking10 easy miles back through tranquil border country — from the Vyrnwy confluence, with views to Rodney’s Pillar, and finishing under Thomas Telford’s historic Montford Bridge.

What to expect on the day

Paddle through one of the River Severn’s quietest rural sections on this 10‑mile downstream paddle from Crew Green back to Montford Bridge. 4km downstream, you will come across the Royal Hill Inn pub, which is a perfect place to stop for lunch before continuing the journey, ending at Thomas Telford’s historic Montford Bridge.

Route at a glance

Start: Crew Green (by the Melverley/Crew Green bridge)
Finish: Montford Bridge (our base, Wingfield Arms)
Distance: 10 miles / 16 km (downstream)
Time on water: 3–5 hrs depending on flow and stops
Water grade: Grade I, gentle current; a few shallow spots in low water.

Waypoints & highlights:

  1. Vyrnwy–Severn confluence: You’ll launch from the confluence of the River Severn & River Vyrnwy
  2. Crew Green launch: rural lay by access near the bridge; we’ll brief and launch you here.
  3. Breidden Hills & Rodney’s Pillar views: to your right (west) as the river bends through farmland; classic Shropshire/Wales skyline.
  4. Optional pubs stop: The Royal Hill (approx. 4km from the start): a traditional riverside pub (landing can be steep — only if conditions/levels allow).
  5. Historic finish under Montford Bridge: Telford’s 1790–92 triple arch sandstone bridge; pull out at our access near Wingfield.

Please bring with you: quick dry layers, shoes you don’t mind getting wet, sun cream, water, lunch. (Dogs welcome on canoes — We don’t provide dog buoyancy aids)

Bringing the kids?

Ages 10 and Up:
Our canoe river trips are open to adventurers aged 10 and older. Children aged 10 and above are welcome to join the journey as long as they’re accompanied by a responsible adult (18+). The child will sit at the front of the 2-person canoe. It’s a fantastic way for families to explore the outdoors together and create unforgettable memories on the water.

And yes, your four-legged friends are more than welcome too! We love dogs and are happy for them to join you on the trip at no extra cost. (Dogs welcome on canoes — We don’t provide dog buoyancy aids)

Please note: For safety and balance, each canoe must have a minimum of two people.

This is a Grade I touring section, but the River Severn can rise quickly after rain. We monitor Environment Agency gauges at Crew Green and Montford Bridge to ensure activities are safe to run.
