Back in April, we had a lovely visit from the Liberal Democrat Leader, Ed Davey, who got to try out our canoe hire experience. While he didn’t arrive on a canoe (we’re working on it), his visit to Shrewsbury allowed us to share the power of outdoor learning and adventure with him.
Talking nature and canoe hire, not politics.
As part of his trip to Shropshire, Ed Davey stopped by to learn more about the work we are doing to make outdoor learning and canoeing experiences more accessible to children and young people. We know from working with schools, youth groups and families that outdoor education isn’t just a fun day out, it’s a life-shaping experience.

Whether it’s exploring a 12-mile stretch of the Severn from Montford Bridge to The Quarry, learning how to steer a canoe for the first time, or simply soaking up the natural beauty around them, young people gain so much from being outside. These experiences help develop green skills, build confidence and foster a love for the environment – skills and values that are more important than ever.
Why canoeing is more than just a paddle
During the visit, we chatted about the many educational, social and personal benefits of outdoor activities like canoeing. Time spent outside builds resilience, teamwork and awareness of the natural world and best of all, it’s fun!
Unfortunately, we also discussed a more serious side: how school and family finances are making it harder for those who would benefit the most from these experiences to take part. That’s why we’re so passionate about making canoe hire and outdoor learning experiences as accessible and affordable as possible.

A big thanks
We were thrilled to welcome Ed Davey and his team and to show him a slice of what makes canoeing in Shrewsbury so special.
They took to the water for a short paddle, and it wasn’t long before a competitive race broke out. The race saw Ed and Helen put the ‘paddle to the metal’ to beat the other two teams to the other side of the Porthill Bridge.
