Here’s everything you need to know about using our launch point at Montford Bridge.

Launch Point Information

Montford bridge launch point on the River Severn - Hire a canoe

The canoe and paddleboard launch point at Montford Bridge is situated on private land, owned by Wingfield Caravan Park. Access to the river is not via a public footpath, but the caravan park kindly allows paddlers to cross their land in return for a small fee. There is a £1 per person launch fee, which helps the owners maintain the land for everyone’s benefit. This fee should be paid in cash using the honesty box, located by the gate at the entrance to the field.

You are very welcome to use the steps and ramp that we have built and regularly maintain for launching. However, please be courteous and wait until Hire a Canoe staff have finished launching their customers before using the ramp. At all times, do not block access and be respectful to staff working on-site.

Parking and Access

Please note that parking is not included in the launch fee. The field to the launch site is often used for camping. This means that parking in the field isn’t always possible.

If you are hoping to park nearby, it may be possible to arrange this directly with Wingfield Caravan Park. Please contact them in advance to check availability.

The main car park in Montford Bridge is owned by the Wingfield Pub, which is a separate business and not affiliated with the launch site. If you do park elsewhere, please never block access to the gate onto the field, as this gate is in constant use. Also, do not park or unload between the “Private” sign and the gate. This area is the driveway for the two houses on the right and should remain clear at all times.

Toilets

There are two portaloos near the launch area. The portaloo at the top of the field is for Hire a Canoe customers. The portaloo at the bottom of the field is for campers staying at Wingfield Caravan Park. Please plan ahead as there may be no public toilet facilities available on site.

Public Transport

There is a bus stop in the village on the X5 route from Shrewsbury. This can be a convenient option if you’re looking for a one-way paddle or avoiding parking issues. Please note, however, that buses do not run on Sundays, so check the timetable carefully before planning your trip.

Launching your canoe, kayak, or paddleboard at Montford Bridge is a great way to access the beautiful River Severn, but it does come with a few important considerations. By respecting the private landowners, paying the launch fee, and being mindful of parking and toilet access, you help ensure this launch point remains open and accessible for everyone.
